Our Story

Autism is the fastest growing developmental disability, and its prevalence is increasing. In 1970, one in 2,000 people was diagnosed with autism in the United States. Today it is estimated to be 1 in 36. Services for people with autism transitioning to adulthood are greatly needed, which is why Easterseals launched Greenleaf Neurodiversity Community Center in 2019 to offer new vocational exploration opportunities and structured social activities focused on individual capabilities and strengths.

What began as a series of weekly arts-based classes and social outings for young adults on the autism spectrum has become a true community center with a talented staff that offers an 18+ transition school program in partnership with the Austin Independent School District, as well as a variety of Social Creativity recreational clubs and vocational training programs that run throughout the year. All Greenleaf NCC programs use a multi-disciplinary approach that incorporates art, drama, digital media, creative writing, and music. And, all Greenleaf NCC activities are designed to promote friendships, creative self-expression, social skills, workplace readiness, wellness, and a sense of community belonging and lifelong learning. There’s a mix of in-person and on-line activities, and more than 70 individuals are participating now on a regular basis.

We hope you’ll get to know us and become part of our community!
